FAHPERDS and Adventure to Fitness ‘Venture’ into a New Partnership

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Message from FAHPERDS Executive Director – Karen J. Dowd, Ed. D.

Across the nation, communities, schools, families, government, varied organizations, health care entities and education have recognized and attempted to address the issues related to childhood obesity, physical inactivity, rising chronic disease and other maladies children should not have to face.  Thus, after much consideration and with great enthusiasm, the Florida Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance & Sport (FAHPERDS) has entered into a partnership with the for-profit company, Adventure to Fitness (ATF), which offers predominately K-5 schools a healthy alternative to fundraising while at the same time providing valuable, educational and motivational activities for all children.  Additionally, 60% of the gross funds remain in the school!

Hebrew Day Healthy Heroes

Adventure guide Mr. Marc was so impressed with his students from Hebrew Day School. “I love it when students really get it! Our kids at Hebrew Day School in Maitland did an amazing job picking up on every healthy and nutritious tip I had to offer. They blew right past me on the way to the summit and created their very own healthy commercials, and played them on the morning announcements. I’ve never had that happen before!”

The Healthy Heroes of Hebrew Day followed Mr. Marc’s lead by venturing into the uncharted and often frightening territory of nutritional facts and food labels. Thrilled with what they discovered this 4th grade class of explorers shared their quest with fellow students by producing and playing super informative and colorful commercials on the morning announcements.

“The response to this healthy & exciting program has been overwhelming and a real tribute to our schools who want to raise money – but now do it in a healthy way”, states Executive Director – Jim Taylor.

Yet each year schools across the nation are responsible for conducting unhealthy fundraisers. The simple truth is *300,000 deaths occur each and every year from obesity related illnesses and even with childhood obesity rates at an all time high, schools continue selling cookie dough and candy fundraisers.

“But we need the money”

It seems most schools don’t realize how much damage one unhealthy fundraiser can inflict on a school and community.
